Alot of people are weirded out by the kid not being in the story much, but I think it's one of the most accurate things about the story. In most royal families children rarely saw their parents. Their parents were usually too busy to interact with their children. Most royal children were raised almost exclusively by nannies. They might see their parents only once or twice a year. The Empress would usually have alot more responsibility too. For some reason it seems like he just wanders around, sword trains, and plays games with the maids. That might be Zigrils doing though.
