The novel makes Cailus’s search for Richard a HUGE part of the whole sequence.
Richard falls from the cliff, nearly drowns, manages to free himself underwater, and finally reaches the snowy land alive. Meanwhile, Cailus stays at the cliff and immediately orders a search party. He even personally goes searching for Richard.
And this isn’t some casual five-minute search either. Four hours pass. Cailus is literally walking through the blizzard, still searching for him and wondering whether Richard is actually dead.
Then Richard finds the cave, warms himself, goes back outside to scout the area—and THAT’S when he encounters Cailus.
Cailus is still searching for him when Richard comes up behind him and grabs his shoulder.
So when Richard says, “We meet again, you bastard,” Cailus turns around and looks completely shocked because he genuinely thought Richard might be dead.
THAT is what makes the reunion so good.
The novel builds this whole tension around Cailus desperately searching for Richard after watching him fall from the cliff, and then Richard suddenly appears alive behind him. It has suspense, emotional weight, and even a little comedy because Richard is basically like, “Surprise, bitch. I’m still alive.”
But the manhwa completely rearranged the scene. And it’s not just this one moment either—the cliff scene was changed too.
At this point, I’m not even talking about minor adaptation differences. They’re changing the entire setup and emotional dynamics of major scenes.
Why???
The novel already gave them such a good sequence. Cailus searching for hours, Richard surviving the sea, the blizzard, Richard finding shelter, and then the two of them unexpectedly running into each other again.
That buildup is literally the reason their reunion feels so satisfying.
When you remove or drastically change Cailus’s search, you also remove the whole “I thought you were dead” tension that the novel spent an entire chapter building.
I genuinely don’t understand why they’re drifting THIS far from the source material. Adaptations obviously need to change things sometimes, but when you keep changing the actual circumstances of major scenes, it starts feeling less like an adaptation and more like they’re rewriting the story.
