Just realized that the incident shown in the beginning of Ch. 1 when they were children, was maybe him becoming too possessive of her to the point that he was trying to convince her to stay hidden with him in the bunker so no one would find them (or actually so no one would find HER) :00
Or maybe it's a misunderstanding and he was trying to protect her or he thought it was genuinely a good idea since they were outcasts in their own homes and running away together would be better.
Anyway it scared FL as a child, that's probably why they grew apart for a while.
