Real. This novel genuinely made me realize why hope is so dangerous
I genuinely just want her dead forever, I can’t see how she can have not even a happy ending, just a peaceful one.
Lowkey fuck with it though - you don't often see stories where the ending is an actual tragedy. I think authors tend to be so afraid of backlash from audiences that they're afraid to write stories with an objectively "unsatisfying" ending.
That said though, I feel like certain things are a bit overkill? Like Jesus Christ

-Thalia becomes disabled
I never knew Korean authors had the guts to PERMANENTLY scar their female leads and leave them with chronic pain, but a huge part of the story going forward is PHYSICAL PAINNN. She also becomes a drug addict and abuses pain relief substances to cope. Her leg gets damaged and so does her mental health. Her scarred, itchy, disabled leg becomes the root of all her future insecurities
-Thalia miscarries
She has infertility issues (runs in her family) but they try for months (HAHHAHA) and she gets pregnant. They lead a sweet married life and their relationship hits its highest peak and BAM her water breaks too early and the baby boy is a stillborn
-Thalia faces religious persecution
There’s a folk tale that says everyone that dies without baptism (like babies) returns as a howling beast to cry out to the people they miss. Thalia saves a baby demon wolf and she loves him like the child she lost. The church is heavily pursuing heretics and Thalia strolling around with a wolf that grew SUPER BIG becomes the icon of the heretical folk religion. She struggles so much to keep the beast by her side

RETHINK IT OKAY
-Thalia fucking dies
Varkas is bound by an oath, that in this lifetime, he must protect the twins. The northern region of the empire wage a war with the empire, colluding with the barbarians north of the border. The prince participates in the battlefield, thus Varkas must leave the dukedom alone for long periods of time. Bound by his oath, he returns too late and finds her cold dead body
-Varkas fucking dies
He visits her grave one day, right next to the grave of their stillborn child and lets Thalia’s magical beast wolf eat him
BUT!
-The Dukedom’s Magical Powers
Just as the late Empress had the power to bind Varkas to the twins for life, it seems being eaten by the wolf allowed Varkas to travel back in time. Since he died, the late Empress’ powers no longer force him to protect the twins and he’s free…

-Varkas comes back as the fucking wolf
Varkas and the wolf now share one body, switching consciousness. He has to hold back the instincts of his body and no matter how hard he tries to signal to Thalia that he’s there, Thalia sees his humanity as her child. She confides in him her pain and loneliness. As a wolf, he has his bounds and he knows he has to protect Thalia and keep her safe in the arms of the other Varkas, the version of himself that hasn’t lost her yet
