And this isn’t even limited to BL. I’ve noticed the same fucking pattern in shoujo, josei, straight romance, basically everywhere. Especially with sports/celebrity-type MLs: like 90% of the time the ML is this experienced fuckboy who’s constantly sleeping around, often with people who are literally in love with him, and somehow those people still obsess over him even though they KNOW he sleeps around. Then the MC comes along and—surprise!—he’s a virgin or completely inexperienced. Like what the fuck is the logic here? The ML can sleep with whoever he wants, have a whole fucking history, and that’s supposed to make him desirable, but the MC has to be untouched so the ML can be his “first” and somehow claim that exclusivity. And even when stories are finally starting to move away from this trope, it’s still ridiculously common. I genuinely don’t understand why authors are so obsessed with pairing the promiscuous ML with the virgin MC instead of just letting both characters have actual, balanced sexual histories.
Are authors seriously scared of letting a virgin MC sleep with anyone other than the ML? Like are they afraid the manhwa is gonna have a fucking downfall if the MC has a life outside of the ML? The ML can be a whole whore and sleep around with whoever he wants, but the second it comes to the MC, suddenly his virginity is treated like some sacred property reserved exclusively for the ML. And after the MC finally loses his virginity to him, does everyone’s brain just fucking stop working? Why are they so terrified of ever showing the MC with anyone other than the ML?
