Chapter 70
When Naos opened his eyes, he expected to see something horrible, like thousands of serpents tangled together, something only a demon could conjure. Instead, he found himself in a small, charming bedroom.
He sat up in the double bed, its sheets covered in little flowers, and looked out the window. It was the beginning of an ordinary spring afternoon, with birds singing less enthusiastically with the beginning of the night somewhere outside.
Everything seemed far too normal.
He remembered the fog before he had gotten dizzy. He remembered the mission, and being with someone...
Pania.
He had been with Pania. Where could she be now? And how had he even gotten here?
He looked away from the window, only to notice something he hadn't seen before. On the bedside table, a carefully folded piece of paper picked up his attention. He unfolded it and read:
"This hallucination is a projection of your own desires. Have fun <3"
"Ugh, this fucking lust demon," he sneered. That's when he heard something coming from the kitchen. When he opened the door, he was bombarded by the smell of...
Pancakes?
He slowly made his way toward the kitchen entrance and stopped when he saw her. She was stunning, as always. Even if he was far too stubborn to admit it.
She flashed him such a wide smile that he almost wanted to slap himself just to keep her from noticing the blush spreading across his cheeks.
"Honey!" she exclaimed. "I'm glad you're awake. I hope you're hungry. I just finished making your favorite before we head out."
What. Was. Happening?
"Pania, what's—"
"Shh. Eat before it gets cold," she said, before literally shoving a forkful of pancake into his mouth.
Okay. That was amazing.
"I'm going to get changed now. I don't want us to be late," she said, already heading toward the bedroom he had left only a few minutes ago.
"Where are we going?" he couldn't help but ask.
"Don't be silly!" she called back. "Oh, and don't forget the tickets after you eat. They're on the table!"

───

Pania actually took longer than expected, so Naos finished the pancakes.
He looked around their humble living room. The pictures on the walls told the story of an alternate reality, one completely different from the life he knew: trips, gatherings with friends, and, finally, a picture of the two of them together at a large event he knew all too well.
He had never known he could smile like that. It was like looking at himself reflected in a lake.
He was speechless.
"Oh, that was such a nice day, wasn't it?" Pania said, bumping her shoulder against his as she stared at the same picture.
Naos looked at her. This beautiful version of her who was, well...
His wife. An ilusion from his own mind.
And, of course, he couldn't say a word, stupid as he was.
"Are you ready? I've prepared everything!" she said.
And for the next few hours, Naos shamelessly decided to ignore the fact that none of this was actually real.
