I think scanlations in general are a dying art. With the rise in licensed digital webtoons, it became easier for anyone to share them, but it sucks for ones that aren’t licensed because there’s a chance it won’t be picked up. Then suddenly these groups popped up bringing scanlation back into the mainstream, but instead of picking up series w/ no official channels or series that don’t already have someone working on them, they just grabbed everything and to add insult to injury expect payment for their work! They’re not official licensors, they don’t have a right to request payment for their work. The whole idea behind scanlators was that they provided a service to others who can’t read/afford a series and sometimes they would ask for donations to keep buying the chapters or whatnot, but that’s different from, “you can’t read this chapter that I’m illegally distributing unless you pay.”
Even if they’re using ai to help with the translation, they could still keep the integrity of what scanlating was all about.
I’m sure many of yall noticed three prominent scan groups that all have 2 things in common with each other. Their scans/translations are all done with AI and they lock their translations behind paywalls. Is it just me who is super annoyed with them?? They fight each other by simultaneously posting different ai translations for one singular chapter of a specific story which causes the notification to spike up for literally no reason. Is it just me who misses the scan groups that used to add reaction memes and post notes that yes couldve broke the immersion of the story but were hilarious nonetheless? I’m not super crazy about being anti-ai but I am against stealing someones work and putting it behind a fucking paywall. Pirating, which is this site, is meant to give acess to content for free! It’s not meant to steal the profit of the work but just be about a group of people that wanted acess to these stories that were locked by the authors own paywalls or were inaccessible due to a language barrier.
My reading experience is ruined when I see those 3 specific groups honestly. It’s bad, low lazy quality and not fun to read nor wait for an update because it will always be garbage.
Also for the real scan groups, thank you guys because yalls notes had me coughing uo my cigarette and slapping my knee.
