I think it works out, Chris gets Allen, Nathaniel finally gets freed from his family's control.

Nathaniel's better off being divorced, free from politics and his family. In the first place, neither Nathaniel nor Allen had feelings for each other. Allen was using Nathaniel to get an heir, and Nathaniel used Allen to buy off his family's affection. It wasn't a healthy marriage, neither of them had attachments to each other beyond their goals.

Nathaniel was just forced to marry Allen because of his family, once he was branded defective, they abandoned him. Why should Nathaniel stay married with someone he was paired off for political purpose, even without Chris, I think getting divorce with Allen would have been the best choice for him. Chris being there makes the divorce easier, since he doesn't have to continue his part in their marriage. Allen wasn't a good husband anyways, so Nathaniel doesn't have to go around desperate for him.
