It's been a while since I read and watched this, but iirc the anime was quite close to the novel. I'd recommend reading it if you can get into the story despite some quite toxic relationships. When I read this the first time the ending had me sobbing and being sad for way longer than I care to admit lol.
if you’re talking about the two ep 90s version then i’d say they’re pretty different tho the vibe is essentially the same. the 2012 version is a closer adaptation to the novels but it was left unfinished. if you liked either of those then i’d say give the novel a chance
