That prince was the brother of princess Elia and in a succession war with her. He was backed up by the conservatives who did not want a woman on the throne, even if she is a war hero.
The mage hanging around the tower master is his nephew and on the other side of the family he is the princess' nephew, so he is also related to that scheming prince.
P.S. The succession war was also the reason Elia could not take better care of her own son Rosian or Jaina her best friends daughter.
