I think it's obvious that the ML is never supposed to be a good person, and even if he does have a ' redemption ' arc, you can't really come back from what he did. If that was the way the story unfolded, it would've been a bad story, sending a bad message.
A message saying that one or two good deeds and 3 days without sleep crying in your bed is enough to excuse and redeem abuse.
But that's not what this story is, it's never really trying to redeem the ML, he's just an awful, calculating and smart man. Who has become such a person due to his surroundings and burdens placed on him.
And also the MC, it was very well set up how fragile his heart is, and how hard of a time he has moving on from loving someone. And this story perfectly shows how people like the ML can abuse and take use of such vulnerable people like the MC.
I don't think this should be read as a romance story, more of like like the movie obsession.
Overall, it was pretty dang interesting. It has its flaws but I enjoyed it.
