Wow I just binged this story and its such a nice change of pace. I like MC and want her to achieve everything she wants in life. When it comes to Arthur, I have mixed feelings. While I am not sure exactly why he rejected her like this, I have a few thoughts. I do think he does have a genuine interest in Greta. He does like her but he mentions he wants to marry for love, an idea he did overhear her gawking at with her friend (for good reason based on her background). He knows she is a talented actress, so he just thought she was essentially confessing to him for money, marriage, and stability. Given Arthur's little knowledge about Greta, isn't entirely out of nowhere. While the audience knows that her feelings are genuine, Arthur cannot trust her words, so he rejects her. I truly think if he didn't like her, he would no have given her a check to fulfill her goals of marriage. Arthur didn't love her but I do think he did like her enough. Man, idk, but when Arthur rejected her, it didn't seem like a facial expression of annoyance that his toy is no longer interesting but something more akin to pain of possibly being this next person Greta was going to utilize.
Now it is time for Greta to misunderstand his rejection. She views him only engaging with her to satiate his boredom, which I do not think that is why she was rejected (and if I am wrong wow Arthur is a POS). It truly lights a fire under her feet to pursue her acting career. I do think this will only steel her resolve that love isn't something she ever wants to feel again. Although, we know it will happen again because this has a romance tag.
