Ok, I think I understood it, but I just don't get Himi's motivation Ukima wanted to become a regular, and looked up to the two leaders. He phrased it as him wanting to be in their level, and somehow, Himi frames it as him wanting to beat them out completely.
Himi quickly seduces them, one after the other, and succeeds. Fracturing their friendship, he manages to create tension between the two of them enough to cause them to fight.
All this, so Ukima can secure a spot as a regular in the boating team without contest. When confronted, as if nothing wrong was happening, he explains his perception to Ukimi.
What I don't understand is Himi himself, and while I get that the author frames him that way on purpose, I still want to follow a thread of reasoning... or is it simply part of the forever unsolved mystery, or something I'm never meant to understand or find out? An intrinsic feature to the story?
I mean, he just didn't seem to care about anything. He was just this gloomy, detatched junior who ignores anything and everything. All it took was Ukimi saying he was glad Himi joined. Before that, he ignored Ukimi blatantly - he didn't even know his name until Ukimi reiterated it later. That's all it was. Stranger still was what he said after: when Ukimi said he liked boats, Himi simply said, "Well then, me too." Did he like boats from the beginning? Was it that he decided to like it too? If the former, why a particular emphasis on that bit?
And why the sudden fixation on such a goal as turning Ukimi into a regular, with just that one conversation? Then when things were going down, he acted like he was removed from it all. He was like that in the beginning, he acted like that when they were fighting, and he acted like that in the ending.
He did all that, because of what Ukimi said, despite being uninterested in everything - because Ukimi said he was happy he joined?
Hm... it can be understood that people's current behaviors are usually linked to their pasts. Maybe his odd fixation on those words were because this was something to be joyous about; same goes for his uninterested attitude from before. As that part is obviously meant to be hidden, I guess the point of this story is to unsettle using beauty and darkness in equal measure, like artworks whose meanings are deliberately left vague. Not everything is meant to be deeply understood, just something to make an impression...
Or maybe I just don't understand, and am clutching at fragile footholds heading to misleading directions, alone.
