He’s a fucking creep who would do anything to possess her. It’s really frustrating to read about the people in Vanessa’s life who are actively harming or deceiving her in one way or another, while she continues to brush things off or give them the benefit of the doubt - before their betrayal is spelled out for her. She exhibits shrewdness, but only when it doesn’t conflict with her worldview—a worldview that, while stemming from her kind-hearted nature, doesn’t really serve her well in the cutthroat world of aristocracy
