Imagine loving someone in every lifetime, and in this one, the person you love suddenly tells you to only focus on "them". Despite being the same person. It's gotta hurt both of the characters. I'm trying hard to understand the other view... but GOODNESS.
... okay maybe I'm simply biased. Because if someone that I even had the smallest bit of attraction to said we were fated across lifetimes, I would humbly accept that. And then thank my past self for adoring such a person.
