You can tell the author is trying to convey what society would be like if second genders were to just pop-up out of nowhere. This is fucked up in the way that our world is fucked up. It dives into horrible topics that would - unfortunately, because of how the world already treats this shit - likely happen. It goes into topics and dissects them, pulling the disgusting parts out and showing them in their raw form, all while shoving in our faces - forcing us to see the horror. It's horrible, horrendous, and horrific, but it's still a great piece of criticism.
I - along with pretty much everyone - hated that scene. It was disgusting, and the dialogue written with it made it - somehow - even worse. The rest of the world playing it off and making it the "norm" was disgusting. The whole first half is disgusting. But holy shit, does the rest of it tear your heart to pieces. Already hating the whole world and "norms" placed in it causes the reader to deepen the emotions felt for the characters, and I think that's beautiful. Causing heart-wrenching emotions to plow you to the ground is something that most authors nowadays don't do in their books, but this one managed to make me cry - and, for the record, I find it really hard to cry when reading or watching anything.
Moral of my TedText is; this story is disgusting, but it'll make you cry...
