I think the queen embezzled some funds that was meant for an orphanage and she put it away in case Alphonso ever need money without having to rely on his father the king.
Following, I didn't skip but I honestly don't remember. Lol
The thing is that since she stole some most of the money,the orphan didn't have enough to eat or the receive care if I remember correctly
