Now I got it why I had that feeling. Reading the author's comment at the end makes sense of it, given that the story is based on their own life.
I really enjoyed the story! The characters don't follow those classic clichés and have more than one layer on them. I even found it quite realistic, because people are complex and not everything is black and white.
