ML never brought FL along on missions because he didn't want to risk her safety. ML didn't know that FL was being mistreated and living in poverty. He used to send her treasures through messengers and assumed she was living well in the same luxurious conditions as the other purifiers.
Irene was tricked by Cecilia into entering a dungeon which supposedly was safe, but was actually full of monsters. So she ended up killed, and afterwards ML finally discovered everything that had happened to Irene; how miserable her life had been. He then killed Cecilia and the entire royal family. He found a way to turn back time, but it took countless attempts before he found a world where Irene was still alive.
I've only skimmed through the later chapters, so I could be mistaken here, but my impression is that ML had absorbed a lot of demonic energy along the way, and is now more of a demon king than a paladin
