i think jinhyeong's father is a really great representation of how most asian households have for kids that are born with exceptional intelligence. one thing is for sure, image is everything to these parents. they see their kids as achievements and they always feel like they are investing for your future, not raising you to be a functioning human. their talk feels so sad because as a reader who has been through this, i deeply feel for both of them. i deeply relate to jinhyeong's inability to adapt socially, feeling awkward and being overly conscious but that's something that happens when you decide to shut yourself from the world. these parents may not realize it but depression can go a long way and could affect a person's way of functioning to their day to day lives. while they did their best to raise their kids comfortably, sometimes comfortable is suffocating. why? because having a comfortable life means that you can do anything with ease which creates pressure and unrealistic standards, both from the parents and the kid itself. you can't feel depressed because you never had it rough in life but you can't be too happy either because you have to prove something to match the life you have. it's hard and sometimes, i just hope these parents know the consequences of their own actions because this will make all the sacrifices irrelevant. why should we be thankful that you fulfilled your duties as a parent when you couldn't even make us feel like you love us? jinhyeong's father loves him but he doesn't know how to love him other than provide him material comfort. i feel like he was raised in an household like that so it stuck to him until he had a child. it's also a matter of pride and keeping appearances since he's a public figure but giving jinhyeong a house he can go home to is the least he can do for a parent. :(
