I'm caught up at chapter 47 and reread chapter 1. When I read it the first time, I thought Than hated Hima (present Hima with white hair), but after understanding more of the context, I feel like it's a lot more complicated than that.
There’s a degree of hatred because he believes this guy caused his fiance’s death and destroyed his home because of the vines. Not realizing that his fiance is actually the cause of the vines and that this person is Hima. However, compatibility and connection don’t just disappear.
With this context, I observed that Than showed concern for Hima in chapter 1. When he collapsed, he displayed a hint of worry, indicating some care, even if subconscious. Their connection explains this, which is also why Hima was regenerated in the first place.
**Theory: I wonder if this takes place in the past, before realizing how important the connection with your guide is to an esper. (Referring to the classic guide verse genre lore.) Basically, before they integrated a pairing system. Their current setup in this world with this guides and espers already seems very buggy and disjointed. While espers are indeed powerful, they seem pretty sloppy. Hima, who found Than, became exceptionally strong once awakened, thanks to his guide’s nurturing.**
Because of their connection, Than always had that sixth sense that Hima was in danger. (Like when Hima was cutting out his eye the first time, Than sensed something was wrong. The way the panel was drawn made it seem like instinct.) I think a guide’s nature, wanting to care for their esper, whether they realize it or not, will show through.
So anyway, I believe there’s hardship and angst ahead. But I also see their chemistry a bit in chapter 1 that I hadn’t noticed before when I read it the first time.
If it takes me paragraphs in order for me to impact what I read, you know the series is fire. Let’s hope they don’t ruin it. ┗( T﹏T )┛
