So I read the novel and Giovanni's past with the mermaids are really heartbreaking

Giovanni was tortured by humans, he was basically dying. The mermaid, Iseru was also captured and was starving so he ate Gio. Part of the reason why he did it was to "preserve" gio inside him. According to the lore, mermaids live for only a "memory" meaning, they never got over Gio's death, the Older Sister just like the younger brother loved Gio. So they resented what the humans in their world did to Gio. The Sun God was heartbroken upon Gio's death and his anger was unleashed to the world. This is the reason why everything was consumed by the sea. Gio and the mermaids do get reunited, it was when Iseru opens the dungeon dragging humans in it. Gio never hated the mermaids, he was glad to see them again.
