Nah, a story can be hardcore and toxic without adding unnecessary non-con in the first place. That’s the author’s choice. They had plenty of other ways to make the story darker without adding this, and honestly, they don’t even have to explain why they chose to add it because the reason is pretty obvious from the direction these stories are taking nowadays.
Anyone who has been following the story knows that. And if this story didn’t have smut, I can definitely say it probably wouldn’t have had this unnecessary non-con either. The story already had various routes to make things hardcore, but now that it’s a smut story, the author has another excuse to add this kind of thing, especially when so many other stories are doing the same. And none of said it was sunshine and rainbow all already knew what was the tone of plot but adding non con between ml and mc is the one thing people are complaining about
