Uhm, anyone feeling sorry for or understanding Roth’s weird ass has some serious issues. But the story itself is actually really interesting.
Anna’s only real mistake is her lack of communication, but even then, she was forced into marriage and manipulated into having a child, so no one can really blame her for her actions. There’s no such thing as a perfect victim.
The ending isn’t really happy or good in any way either, though I think some readers seem to interpret it that way. Anna’s whole life was spent being caged by expectations and pressure. When she married Roth, it was just another cage - a pretty one, but still a cage.
She only loves Roth because he was the one person who took care of her and treated her with love. She likes the idea of being chained to him because she was chained to her sick mother her entire life. Her love for Roth is tied to her low self-esteem. Her choice to remain tied to him is essentially her continuing to live the life she has always known.
In the end, Roth ruined both her life and her son’s life. He turned their son into a psychologically damaged child who desperately longed for love because his father failed to provide it, instead obsessing over a dead woman. I hate him.
But you can’t help feeling a sense of longing for him, too. He’s the kind of man you could depend on. rich, hot, and, most of all, completely obsessed. It’s no wonder she stayed with him, even after he humiliated her and spent their entire lives doubting her.
Basically, nothing here is meant to be romanticised and theres a clear victim and a clear abuser. Meaning no anna IN MY OPINION is not even slightly in the wrong.
