Letting go and holding on...

I know a lot of readers are rooting for Hyung and mostly because Sunbae has been such a jerk for a long time, but to me, Hyung and Sunbae are two sides of the same coin with a few differences, but the one that really stands out is: want vs need. I also know that a lot of readers are feeling sorry for MC, but I think that some are pitying him for the wrong thing, also, he's not the only one that should be pitied. Of the three of them, none of them are without blame, but all of them are victims. MC is a victim of fate. Sunbae is a victim of society. And Hyung is a victim of his own existence.

Sunbae doesn't get a pass for how much of a jerk he was, but he also can't be held responsible for everything he did. The bottom line is that you shouldn't treat people like they are disposable. And Sunbae is guilty of that, but it doesn't mean he never had feelings for MC. I believe that he didn't know what to make of how he felt but was probably so used to being around fake and frivolous people that when he developed genuine feelings, he couldn't even begin to recognize them.

MC misled Sunbae by saying a lot of things he thought would keep Sunbae close to him. He manipulated Sunbae by making him believe sex was supposed to hurt, by never opposing anything or speaking up for himself. Even if Sunbae knew MC liked him, he thought it was casual like all his other relationships; romantic, platonic, or otherwise. For him, all the people around him had their own agendas, so why would he think MC was any different? MC never asked for more and never showed his pain or disappointment, so how was Sunbae supposed to know?

But the truth is, the MC did have his own agenda, part of which he was aware of (simply liking Sunbae) and part of which was being worked out in his subconscious (needing Sunbae to keep him from being swallowed up by fate). He wanted to be with Sunbae so he allowed all manner of transgressions to go unchallenged. He lied to Sunbae and then completely forgot what he told him. He silently blamed Sunbae, sowing distrust in his own heart, even though Sunbae never once lied to him. Sunbae acted as far as he understood his own feelings and desires; remember, Sunbae is a realist.

Sunbae has now laid all his cards on the table. He really wants to be with MC and not because he doesn't want MC to be with Hyung or anyone else, but because he simply loves him, though he doesn't quite fully get that yet. Hyung is a living, breathing human who wants a shared emotional connection with MC because he likes him. Although he's begging him for another chance, if MC truly drew a line and truly said he didn't want to be with Sunbae anymore, not because he's scared and not because he doesn't trust him, but because he no longer feels anything for him, Sunbae would be hurt, but he would know he had no choice but to let MC go.

Hyung on the other hand, no matter what he promises MC, his goal is to possess MC because MC is the only reason Hyung still exists. He can say he'll give him love and everything he can wish for, but it's not a true emotional connection, it's pure manipulation. Hyung will create a reality for MC to live in where never has to worry about anything, but that's not living and that's not love. If the MC tried to cut Hyung off for good, Hyung would never go gentle into that good night.

Certainly, the MC could leave them both behind, but if he wants any chance of truly being loved and having his love accepted in return, there's only one choice he can make. He can live in a fantasy and truly divorce himself from reality with Hyung who NEEDS him more than MC NEEDS Hyung or he can nurture a real love with Sunbae, someone just as flawed and forgiving as himself and who WANTS MC just as much as MC WANTS him (which MC will understand once he lets go of his guilt).

So, MC needs to choose between letting go of reality and holding on.

Though, he could have his cake an eat it too, because Hyung said he could come back for him in 100 years, after he's lived a normal life. But can you live a normal life with that hanging over your head?
