from what i can gather the director saw a reflection of his former self in tae-an, and because of the trauma he held he gained an obsession to ruin tae-an, i think this is to gain some semblance of control of his trauma, there's cases where victims associate themselves in the same/similar environment where their trauma was inflicted. it's also the fact he's somewhat aware the reason why he did that, to the point where its like he did that to lessen the aftermath of his actions to tae-an. when he stepped in to stop that colonel bc he saw that tae-an didn't succumb to the 'to kill or kill' (since the director was in a similar situation whether to obey or die). he had a hint of hope that went back into him in a way, i think it's like that feeling where someone thought something was impossible to achieve but we're able to witness it to accept the fact it was possible. the breakdown at the end he realises that he's still at the same place where his former self was except he was just granted a name to seem of importance. basically saying that all the "acceptance" and shit he had to endure was all for nought. he is still a rapist tho. there's quite a few psychological analysis that i can observe from here that i honestly would've love to read and delve deeper. ah unfortunately it was just rapeslop.
