Okay, I’m reassessing my take from this manhwa (?) more like of Brett's entire character lol.
My first impression is somewhere in the comments so I’m just going to ref that in some instance.
I thought Brett was just an aloof, outgoing guy and then later on he revealed his logical, calculating side. But I was completely wrong.
He was calculative from the start, I just never knew to what extent. He revealed that he used Scott to get Hayden over to the frat so he can provoke him. BUT, he approached Hayden on the week where his rut was coming up, not only that later on he revealed that he didn’t know what the right price was when he was offering to pay for tutoring, I honestly didn’t get it at first, I thought that was just general talk and meant it literally. It was more so, what price is the right amount for you to interfere.
When they went out, the first thing he mentions is Hayden’s smell, the very thing he wants hidden. Then later, instead of discussing the project he talks about the sheep on Hayden’s computer. Calling him out metaphorically, that he is in a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Each of the events happened solely to get Hayden’s attention.
I just thought it was small talk or a small talk leading up to something meaningful, but no. He had calculated everything from the start.
Which leads up to Hayden building up some sort of resentment to Brett because he called him out. This then perfectly suits Brett’s situation since ultimately he knows he and Hayden are sexually compatible in terms of pheromones. One’s a masochist and the other I wouldn’t say a sadist but just more intense (in regards with their second gender).
Then of course we know what happened after, Hayden fell for the provocation and they fucked, which was Brett’s intention from the start.
At the office when Brett was quoting King Agamemnon, I lowkey didn’t get it when he said ‘if it were him he would’ve rather gone through the storm, because it’s more exciting’. It’s more so he was saying to Hayden, “You are like King Agamemnon, you would rather sacrifice your own (second gender), rather than fighting through the storm of the unknown.” Brett’s way of calling out Hayden is honestly very poetic and beautiful especially since Hayden is in a Writing Major. Based of this, I thought Hayden was perhaps a sociopath. No. I’m wrong, he is neither a sociopath or a psychopath. He is, I am not too sure, but he is someone who understands emotions and acts on them, however, prioritises logic and rationality above all for the outcome he is aiming for. I wouldn’t say he’s perfect, but I feel like he’s perfect, when danger approaches, he knows that emotions will only cloud your judgment and hinder to think clearly. This is shown when he was kidnapped by the 3 homeless guys and got assaulted.
I now understand why Brett was the way he was at the end, he doesn’t understand love because love is a spontaneous emotion, does that make sense? Someone who lived a life of control and calculation, and then confronted with something instinctive.
He loves Hayden in his own way, even when sometimes I’m like ???, hmmm, I think he likes to observe Hayden and how he acts towards him that made him fall for him. Does that makes sense? I really like the end that they work together to understand how to “love”.
After this reread it made me appreciate Brett’s character more, and the nuances and metaphors and quotes/ref on here.
Besides that, I still abide by the story being good/okay, it was cohesive at the start and kinda in the middle but there were many things that were introduced/mentioned/hinted that never progressed.
