The "super-hearing" thing stopped being relevant after the first chapter. He didn't even need it, he could still have ended up enticed by ML's voice even with normal hearing. Also, like the others said, the last chapter is straight-up dumb. You don't need to let criminals off the hook just to keep your "good person" halo intact.
