Honestly, yall will start hating me for it, but yeah, it is complexly written. But is it well written? In my opinion, yes. But the timeline shouldn't have even existed. I have such intricate thoughts about this manhwa and I can't stop reading it because it saved me from a tough time in past and Im not exaggerating this part.
S1 of OTL is what I would say the peak fandom and era of OTL. Because the jellypop plot was something not many manhwas featured back then. The art itself being a factor and the story, plot devices, characters, betrayal, everything written beautifully. Ra Im's inner thoughts, Su ae's plan, her romance with Eunhyeok, Dohwa as second male lead, it was all fantastic. But then there are some things which were written in S1 which I believe foreshadow what was going to happen. For instance, in S1, the chapter where Eunhyeok was crying outside the Piano recital, After Su ae kissed him, her thoughts said that SHE thought she is going to be with Eunhyeok for a very long time. Foreshadowing? Could be. Am I reading too much into things just to satisfy myself from feeling this manhwa is a lost case? Probably. S1 pretty much showed things which an ideal romance manhwa with a unique plot would show. The contract with Haru, The interactions with both Eunhyeok and Dohwa, everything was full circle, ending the season with a kiss at the beach.
Now S2 started. The beginning of S2 was SOOOO GOOOD. The tension and romance bw Su ae and Eunhyeok? Impeccable. Their moments as a couple were so cute yet hot. Of course Dohwa's suffering was there as well(I didnt want that :( ) but anyways, the moments were really cute. Even her continuing the story and agreeing to the contract was mentioned so the jellypop plot was relevant. We all kinda expected things to happen in Eunhyeok's family but A STRAIGHT UP TIMESKIP? HELL NO
What we fail to understand is Eunhyeok and Su ae have been the primary ship and unfortunately, Dohwa got the role of the second male lead. Yeah its embarassing to be hung up over something 10 years back but that part of time 10 years back was one of their roughest time. Su ae in Eunhyeok's familial situation, Su ae seeing Dohwa for who he is and Eunhyeok with Su ae when the whole school was against her. Certain events in teenage era really do shape our adult hood. Yes. They are stuck in the past, at the same time facing the present. Probably that is what makes the story complex. The inner monologue of each character is symbolised and written beautifully.
Su ae is stuck in the past because of the ache she felt because of Eunhyeok. He was the only one for her in the past. The one who truly loved her, yet he left her. That made the longing turn into hatred but at the same time a part of her wishes to be with him, it was evident until recently how she let him go away after learning about him and Ra Im, probably finally actually TRYING to move on
You guys need to understand Eunhyeok went through a whole lot of shit through at once. I'm not depreciating Su ae's suffering but we always undermine what Eunhyeok went through as well. His mother ate pills and died and blamed him. His father is an abusive pos. His father forced him to go to a boarding school. And even then all he saw was her. He only met Ra Im because RA IM MET HIM. And Ra im being Ra Im, probably made him guilt trip to stay with him with tht false sibling narrative. What he has his anxiety, depression and overthinkingness. He read too much into thoughts because he cared for Su ae ig. When he saw her at the bus when he came back to Korea, she was happy. At least thats what he saw. And him getting back in her life probably would have made things worse for HER, Not him, as it did presently. Yeah he was thinking selfishly, but a part of him yearned and begged for her happiness as well. The man is going full deaf, he has insomnia cause he keeps seeing his first love in a rooted past version and just can't seem to escape her and so thought burying those feelings was probably the only way.
If I had to choose between Eunhyeok and Dohwa as my absolute faves, its Dohwa no doubt. If I had to choose between who should BE WITH SU AE, Eunhyeok no doubt. Dohwa's love is shown as that one unreciprocated love that can never be reciprocated. Honestly, when you truly do love someone, its just not possible to change those feelings even if time passes by. This applies to all 3 here, especially Dohwa. But what he can't understand his that despite being rejected 3 times, he somehow came to be with Su ae. But Su ae just can't seem to see him more than that. He's willing to even leave his FUCKING CAREER for her but... she just can't see him more than a friend. YOU CAN'T FORCE SOMEONE TO LOVE SOMEONE ELSE. I deadass bawled and tweaked for good fucking hours at the recent chapters for Dohwa.
Every character is flawed. The season shows the actual realities. How people would genuinely react and face each other, though a bit exaggerated. Should this season have turned into this direction? In my opinion, absolutely not. They should have shown their ADULT LIVES tg in university and focused on someone else seperatelt for Dohwa's love life. Nonetheless, the season is still good in my opinion. A beautifully fucking ragebaiting season which I can't seem to stop reading.
