It genuinely is a bit of whiplash for him to go from this kind of uncaring, mean man (I think he comes off meaner in the novel) to then doing a literally 180 and being a caring husband for Erna
And this comes from me, who actually really cherishes this series. The snowman scene where everything came out, and thereafter they were able to finally share their true feelings with each other
I think he needed some more time before he started the chasing arc, because his behaviour before that was literally appalling with no explanation bc there's no way your wife has a miscarriage, you're uncontactable through it (this he gets a pass) then he comes back and there isn't any explanation for your insanely vulnerable just had a miscarriage wife like
