He actually does something like that much earlier (spoiler), should happen in a few chapters. But what he becomes aware now is important for the chapters you mentioned, that is correct.

He runs into Dane's burning house, the other firefighters won't enter, to save Darling.

This chapter is significant to the story despite the random ass explosion because we see Grayson not ever feeling like he can walk into a fire to save someone's life. But later on in the story Grayson runs into a burning building on the brink of collapsing to save Dane even though the odds at the time were tipped towards neither making it out alive but he does it anyway for love. (Also note : I read the novel so long ago that my memory is hazy and what I've said isn't exactly 100% so don't quote me on it.)
