Smut has always been part of yaoi bc yaoi originally meant BL with smut. A lot of old yaoi manga have smut, it's nothing new, the problem is that many ppl don't know the meaning of the term and some non smut BLs are incorrectly called yaoi when they're actually shounen ai. Shounen ai refers to BL without smut, that's prob what ur looking for
That’s so true. I read a lot of shounen-ai when I was younger; now, reading yaoi feels too extreme. It can go both ways. Lately, it feels unprecedented; some authors are lackadaisical with their work and do the bare minimum with the plot. It’s just smut after smut each chapter. If that’s your main thing, fine, no qualms but there has to be balance. Nowadays, it feels like it’s on extreme ends of the spectrum.

I agree. I used to read mostly yaoi bc I liked smut, but over time it became tiring to read comics that were all porn and no plot. Even comics with a semblance of plot are bombarded with smut scenes like you said so now I usually skip smut scenes, but it's lwk hard to do when every other chapter is just smut lmao.
Unfortunately, sex sells, and it's also important to keep in mind that most Asian comics are directed towards an Asian audience, and most artists/authors don't know much about their international readers due to language barriers. I recommend getting into webnovels, I've noticed that webnovels tend to have more plot compared to comics, although there is still usually smut, but they're not usually as prevalent as it is in comics
Whatever puts food on the table for the authors, I totally get it even if their work ends up being mostly smut. At the end of the day, like you said, these stories are written primarily for their native audience, and the rest of us are just privileged to get official translated chapters.
I've been reading a lot of web novels lately, and some of them have manhwa adaptations, too. The only disappointment I have is with Chinese novels. Most of their work is no longer 18+ because of strict Chinese government censorship.
Especially after everything that happened with the crackdowns, JJWXC for example. Because of that, I always try to look for the explicit, uncensored versions through Taiwanese publishers instead. Anyhow, I prefer web novels more now. They are way better than comics, you get so much more context, and it is infinitely so much clearer. ;))
