After reading both the novel and the manhwa, I don’t see Layla as completely helpless at all. She knew Bill was responsible for the fire, yet still approached Matthias to save him, consciously using Matthias’ attraction to her as leverage. She barely considers the actual victims, which I found pretty selfish.
I don’t agree with Matthias either, but both of them were trying to use each other, Matthias had the power, while Layla used the feelings she knew he had for her. The difference is that Matthias had far more power, so the deal was never truly equal. They both thought they were playing the other and that’s what makes their relationship so messed up.
