I think his entire thing is that he chose the crown prince over his family, not just for show but also emotionally. He's always going poor crown prince, but he's a little self aware that he's ignoring his son.
I may be remembering wrong but in the novel he was very hum practical? I don't wanna say cold cause it feels kind of "he was cold but he cared" in at least for me it didn't really felt like his care about anything that wasn't logical, practical and by the rules, and he was also extremely loyal towards the crown like his only mission in this word is to prove he would never betray the crown not even for his own family
