-The title even mentions Mona Lisa and the painting’s androgyny but by the end of the story our main character must be one thing or another.-
I’m a bit confused here by the end. Major themes of this story discuss: masculinity, femininity outside of gender stereotypes, nonbinary and gender fluidity, gender and sex not dictating or directly correlating sexuality or romantic attraction. Alongside growing up and finding out who you are.
Hinase throughout first 8 books is discovering all these things and dealing with them alongside their friends/ possible future romantic partners. Many times through story hinase expressesnot wanting to change or be one thing. They like being themselves and non binary. Shiori and ritsu like this about hinase and discover they like them for them, regardless of what gender hinase has to pick.
Here’s were I get confused…just because hinase has to pick a sex to literally stabilize hormones and survive doesn’t mean they have to stop presenting as nonbinary or stop their gender fluidity if that’s who they themselves persieve themselves as and like being that way.
It does matter if hinase chose guy or girl because they are still hinase and like to be nonbinary. Much like how in this real world people technically have a sex but are gender fluid or nonbinary.
You could even still have the what if with different romantic interests but why have to pick boy or girl when a major part of story was importance of being both or neither hinase being themselves. Or at least include this route with the other endings shown.
