U know that one meme that was going around w the guy rolling the boulder up the hill? Well that guy was a figure from Greek mythology. He was basically sentenced to push the boulder up, however every time it was almost at the peak he would watch it roll back down and would have to do it all over again. There's more to it but that's just the basic summary :P
It's a really fucking cool metaphor in this story too that's why everyone's freaking out (≧▽≦)
Essentially, Sisyphus is a character from Greek Mythos who was punished by the Gods and doomed to have to try and push a huge boulder to the top of a mountain. Except, every time he got near to the top, the boulder would just roll back down to the bottom.
Hence, the term 'Sisyphean' came about to describe tasks that are labourious and fruitless, meaning that they take a lot of effort but bear no real results.
