HELP HOW DID PETE EVEN END UP ON A STICK THIN BRANCH OVER A RIVER

I think he was trying to retrieve his dog stuffed animal that i think he accidentally dropped into the river

From the little stuffed toy they showed floating in water, I think they want us to infer that he probably went through the hole in the fence trying to play with the dog, dropped his toy in the water, and then tried to retrieve the toy and couldn’t reach it but grabbed the plant so he wouldn’t get swept away.
