I think CG genuinely wanted to become emperor. He convinced himself that it was the only way he'd ever be worth anything and that it was the only way he could protect Sam and keep him by his side. It wasn't just about getting revenge on the people who mistreated him. He wanted to become powerful enough to keep Sam, a married man, by his side forever, even if it meant going against Sam's own wishes and defying the law and morality.
I'm rooting for former crown prince to take back the throne honestly. He's so hot and his dimples, my god I'm down bad. But seriously, if he really wants to be king then sure. And although he might have psychopathic tendencies like that whole royal family had, at least he seems more emotionally stable then Changgeon
And I don't think Changgeon really wants to be emperor. He just wanted revenge and get Sir Samyeong back. So I hope Changgeon gives up the throne. And that he and Samyeong may forgive and trust each other and live far away from this whole mess. With the kid too? Don't know if Samyeong will be able to forgive Changgeon though, but I also don't think author will let Changgeon die and not end up with Samyeong.
