Pretty sure in japan cornrows are more of a fashion thing, like they'll know its history and still associate it with fashion more than anything else... the delinquent comment is pretty sure cuz japan as a collective society doesn't like people who are "different" so often associate anything that's not inherently traditional japanese as delinquency... even blonde hair or even ear piercings at times
Somehow these type of discourse happen mostly in america whereas elsewhere its just on do what you like basis. Yeah conrows have a history and cutural significance, but watching a kid getting inspired by basketball players and doing them is not racist or bad. Yall talk about it like they commited nazi level crimes. Plz unclench
Bsfr im not even close to North America, and others from all over express my same opinion(although rather harshly), all I did was express uncomfort as a black individual, didn't even call ot racist or wrong btw, just expressed it was problematic, there's nothing bad about being inspired by a black person but like you said there's is a cultural significance in the hairstyle and it does have an issue of being done as just a fashion piece or rebranded, which is how it is somewhat treated here, while the people who have originated it, get hated and bashed on for the same 'new fashion trend' just because it is done in no harm, or infact praised, doesn't make it good either, see benevolent racism as an example. Did my opinion shoot you're entire family? Coming all loud and defensive at me and for what. I'm not tryna talk for all black ppl here nor am I saying these highschool fictional characters are racist bigots, I'm saying that the idea itself is problematic, and made an unfunny mangago comment about it.
I have to agree Americans have some weird and annoying takes, but this isn't about them.
No Queen, you’re very much valid in what you’re saying. It isn’t racist of them but they’re not doing it out of appreciation. His curiosity is more admiration, but for basketball players that do cornrows are solely for specific and intentional reasons.
I mean it can be fashionable if you make it, but intentions are important when you’re trying to do hairstyles from other cultures. Also, I don’t see any of these people acting this way under the plenty of comments about the whole cornrows thing. No one is calling them racist, but at least recognize that it’s jarring that him wanting to wear cornrows means he’s turning towards the “delinquent life”.

Holy whiplash, the cornrow life is not for ya'll I'm sorry, unless you want hair damage and get called ignorant go right ahead, the delinquent comment did not help
