i genuinely think the author does an incredible job portraying the psychological effects of long term abuse and manipulation. so heartbreaking to know that he knows he’s being manipulated, yet he’s been conditioned to believe that the same person hurting him is the only one who can save him. it’s like he’s lost the ability to believe he has a choice, a voice, or even the right to ask anyone else for help. and when ilwoo genuinely offers him a way out, baekhee can’t even imagine it being possible. the author portrays this so realistically because sometimes the damage goes beyond the abuse itself it’s what years of being made to feel powerless can do to someone’s ability to believe they deserve better. watching baekhees struggle to believe he can be helped is genuinely devastating.
