Long tangent incoming but I wanna start by saying I actually enjoyed this story. I can see why a lot of people don’t because of the more mature and very intense themes; it’s just that I feel like this is meant to be a story of unfairness. It was unfair that youji bullied misato when they were in school because he couldn’t handle his feelings, unfair when they rekindled as adults and he hit him again, and unfair to Shoko too because she knew she was just a stand in for the person youji was truly yearning for But i think I like it so much because it made me sad for them, seeing these two people who don’t seem to know how to love without violence, and Shoko being the gentle guide to help them turn these “sparks” she saw into something more concrete, something that’s no longer childish impulsiveness of brand new feelings, but something that can be a lasting, steady thing instead I don’t really think the story is meant to be like “hitting is fine as long as they love each other!” I really do think it’s meant to show the ugliness of not letting yourself feel things and how that manifests into the relationships you currently have and maybe never had the chance to experience
