Abuse is truly terrifying. It strips away a person’s self-belief and sense of independence—that, too, is a form of damn abuse. I immediately thought of a friend of mine who was sobbing, saying she was already 30 and had nowhere to go if she left her unhinged husband. Abuse robs you of the realization that there is always a way out—that you are capable of helping yourself. In the end, the abuser consumes you entirely.
