Manipulation is bad, but I think the ML's actions would be more forgivable if he's doing all this because he's in love with the MC. And that he only dated betas to show the MC that alphas and betas can be together, but the MC is just too dense to get the message. It would be disappointing if the ML were only doing this because he thinks he's being a good friend or something.
