Im trying to figure out how much of Sisyphus is in this story. If you don't know his myth is basically him tricking the gods, cheating Thanatos (aka death) and then eternally rolling a big rock up a hill as punishment.
Things like Guwon's scars and the sea of corpses point to a very man made type of interpretation of this story. Maybe their gated village (it's crazy how good of a location they have for post apocalypse standards, no?) serves as testing grounds, maybe even a game. Someone is making copies of Guwon and MC, but only Guwon gets all the ugly scars? Does that mean he's been recycled more or that to begin with the point of the testing ground was to create the perfect work horse/leader type in a situation like this? -Which Guwon would be the prototype for. But if that really was so simple the "simulation" would've been shut down already, no? The town people don't seem to be actors either, there is no evidence of some greater power or people in power being at work.
I feel like in their next life there is going to be a lot of answers in whether the village people will look the same or even be the same person. Literal time travel isn't off the table either, because the corpse cushions that MC saw may very well be a hallucination, but one based in reality. What Guwon said briefly brought something back to the surface and his mind tried to comprehend it unsuccessfully.
One thing I'm highkey certain of is that the protection and "success" of the town IS the Sisythus task.
