what ended up happening in the novel- so I didn't like Vale as much given his initial impression but that gut-like reaction to attack the lord, adding to how the overseer would coerce kids to go into the coal mine and more nuance to his character. he deserves to be tia's right/left hand. to recap he was sold into slavery and I don't know if it was the translation, but it was even worse knowing that the overseer was another laborer who organized to exploit the children. vale worked to the point of vomiting blood to the point he rarely went back home. vale had to believe in the agreement that the adult would have taken care of the kids if he outputted more than others. and by the time he was able to come back, several of the children had died from starvation. he became a mercenary after killed that adult and continues to send the money back(?) a handful of the kids are still alive! but sincerely you get to learn why vale has been curt with a child begging for affection, and why he's been so money hungry. the reconciliation during tia's fever was oh-so bittersweet given how they both had it rough
