Okay so my current hypothesis is that he's a poison bird / firebird (phoenix?) mix. Which is only based on the mention that the last firebird went extinct 100 years ago (why mention that if it wasn't important in some way). Also the one other bird that could survive a poison bird would be one that can die and resurrect itself.
