Just so ya'll know, I damn near cracked my theorizing skull open on this series a while back, and the first thing that I noted was how Guwon, during the maggots becoming a massive issue, had literally crawled out from under the rubble of a building. At first, I thought he must have been a maggot as well, or something inhuman. But now, now his behaviors are clicking into place!
Guwon has done this before, so many times, that it's likely his body reacts on instinct when the cycle restarts. Why kill so many, but not those kids? Because the others caused the restart, likely many times over. It's very possible that the first iteration, Guwon did save and take in every survivor he could, but either due to betrayal or lack of reasources, he and the others died. It's possible that his subconscious remembers, which could explain his extreme difficulties sleeping, but his conscious doesn't. The two parts mixing together, means his conscious may have had unnecessary things stripped from it, so his more instinctive reactions could better navigate the world around him. Empathy? That's a luxury our survival can't afford this time if we intend to survive. This town is a great way to stay safe and is incredibly defensible, so we have to fill it with the right people, or we fail again.
Also, as an added theory, I think the hounds are likely also in the same kinda hell. The guys reaction to the full moon and his extreme urge that they needed to return, would make sense if Guwon had been a werewolf or something, but he isn't. Meaning that hounds subconscious also remembered something important.
It also explains more about the townspeople and their acceptance of the actions Guwon took. I had been wondering this whole time why none of the people there were actively trying to kill Guwon. Like, if someone killed my family in from of me, sure, I'd be scared, but I might risk death if it meant sending the man who took my everything to hell. But they not only didn't do that, but the townspeople didn't want Guwon dead either. This is most likely because they died shortly after Guwon did every cycle, so their subconscious knows that they need him alive.
What's more, those bodies likely are not every single cycle. I actually think they maybe be the most recent cycles, and that the reason this one keeps having the same ending, is due to Guwon repeating the exact same actions because this may have been the most content end he has ever had. He doesn't want to let it go, like me as a kid rewinding and replaying my VHS of The Last Unicorn.
Ohhh, this series has just shot to the top as one of my favs, and the author did an insane job on this plot! I really hadn't considered the idea that we were in a "What if the 11th School Trip, but more fucked?" situation! I'm hype to see where this goes!!!!
Also, something def off about our other MC. Bro also got serial killer vibes, but I am now wondering if that was his base or if he became that way due to the cycles.
