Cyril in this story reminded me a bit of Luna's teacher in Champignon no Majo. Both of them were essentially executed for an "unforgivable crime", and left their students (main characters) behind. There might've been another way for Cyril, but I guess he thought it was only a matter of time, and he can't afford to drag down the people important to him. In fictional stories like these, I'd like to hope that if reincarnation doesn't exist in their world; that they may be reunited with their loved ones someday.
