My own head cannon for sanity sake: MC takes the current situation at face value- abuse and kidnapping = revenge for ML childhood abuse and kidnapping by MC father. MC takes it all to mean ML doesn't like him anymore/fed up with his BS and now is trying to break MC. MC uses the utensils to hasten the process as ML seemed "surprised" he ate like he expected "something else". MC does it under the bed, writes apologies/farewells in blood and ML finds him then it clicks for ML that this isn't the way... Recovery arc, fearful MC etc...
