Mafuyu’s a great depiction of grief

I knew about Given as an anime originally. I always thought of Mafuyu as an “airhead” like he’s often described, and how he describes himself sometimes/he’s aware that he gives this off. But now that I’ve read up to this point in the manga (page 176)… I’m finding that he’s honestly THE BEST depiction of grief that I’ve seen.

I read through the page where Ueonoyama’s written the song for Mafuyu, and Mafuyu doesn’t know what to write. When Haruki tells Mafuyu to just write, Mafuyu just says like “How would you put into words the feeling of loosing your lover?” (Not verbatim, but basically).

Like wow. Before all of that, Mafuyu had been melancholic, quiet, not very expressive. But that subtle snap while he was looking at Haruki. WOW. I think it’s perfect. Grief by a quiet tension that could snap any moment!
